On 3rd , CECIC organized a meeting with elected youth leaders of 3 divisions of Nyawamba , Bulembia , Central Kasese Municipality which has been prone to several harsh climate conditions which have included floods and prolonged droughts .
The meeting was about localizing the IPCC Report that had been released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. A total of eight youth elected leaders attended the meeting where the report was discussed and looked for a way forward for how the local governments can implement the recommendations in the report.
The youth counselors stated that it is urgent for both local and central governments to put more funds towards climate change mitigation and they have already played a role in allocating over 15 million uganda Shillings towards climate change mitigation.
The funds allocated will be used in creating awareness on both community gathering and setting up a climate change information desk which will be a response for ensuring that all the investment decisions are in line with the climate change mitigation plan.
Miss Muhindo Ann , further thanked CECIC for its nice work towards saving the environment and this has been evident with various comments i have personally received from my comment about the CECIC that gone ahead by training women in alternative energy sources such the briquettes and the cook stoves that they have been able to pay through their saving groups.
We also believe that the IPCC report should not only be kept by the central government but it’s also a responsibility of the leaders to take responsibility and make right decisions that will save the communities and environment that we live in.
‘Í would like to engage my fellow leaders to join in issuing a statement about climate change and how the youth elected leaders can take on this fight, i will further request for leave and prepare a law that will require all business , housing plans amongs to first present their climate change mitigation plans before they are approved. Says Obed Bwambale”
The meeting was concluded with the youth counselors promising to follow on the changes that they have promised.
