Civil society demands clean, affordable energy for all at the heart of the COP30 agenda
Climate and social justice organizations worldwide urge COP30 to prioritize a just, equitable, and swift transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This transition must center Indigenous, Black, marginalized, and vulnerable communities while ensuring the world’s wealthiest, most polluting nations pay their fair share. The letter emphasizes that expanding renewables alone isn’t enough—there must be a managed phaseout of fossil fuels to limit global warming to 1.5°C. COP30 must serve as a turning point where civil society influences binding, people-centered climate action. It must avoid replicating harmful extractive practices and instead support community-led solutions that ensure no one is left behind.
