Kiteezi Landfill Statement

Kiteezi Landfill in Wakiso District, which has tragically claimed the lives of over 23 people and left many more injured or missing. This disaster is a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive and sustainable waste management practices in Uganda.

The Kiteezi Landfill, which has served as Kampala’s primary waste disposal site since 1997, was receiving around 2,500 tonnes of waste daily.

Despite earlier warnings about its deteriorating condition, no significant action was taken to prevent this catastrophe. The collapse has exposed critical vulnerabilities in our waste management infrastructure and the consequences of failing to prioritize public safety and environmental protection.
