Climate resilience
Climate Justice

Climate Change & Community Resilience

Empowering Rwenzori communities to adapt through agroecology, reforestation, and climate-smart livelihoods.

Why it matters: The Rwenzori region is highly vulnerable to climate shocks — erratic rainfall, landslides, and prolonged droughts threaten food security and livelihoods for thousands of families.

Our approach: We train farmers in conservation agriculture, establish community tree nurseries, and facilitate access to weather information systems. Over 2,000 households have adopted climate-resilient farming techniques through our programs.

EACOP pipeline construction
Governance

Natural Resource Governance

Holding extractive industries accountable and ensuring communities benefit from Uganda’s oil, gas, and mineral wealth.

Why it matters: The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) and related developments threaten ecosystems, livelihoods, and community land rights across the region. Without strong advocacy, affected communities risk displacement and environmental degradation.

Our approach: We support communities to document impacts, engage in legal advocacy, and amplify their voices in national and international decision-making forums on oil and gas governance.

Kazinga Channel, Kasese
Just Transition

Just Transition

Advocating for a fair shift to renewable energy that protects workers, communities, and Uganda’s natural heritage.

Why it matters: As Uganda develops its oil and gas resources, communities near protected areas like Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Kazinga Channel face pollution, habitat loss, and disrupted livelihoods.

Our approach: We advocate for community-led renewable energy solutions, support alternative livelihoods for affected families, and push for policies that prioritise people and nature over extraction.

Plastic waste in Uganda
Gender & Health

Gender, Health and Environment

Addressing the disproportionate impact of environmental degradation on women and marginalised groups.

Why it matters: Women in rural Uganda bear the brunt of environmental degradation — they walk further for water, suffer from indoor air pollution, and are often excluded from decision-making on natural resources.

Our approach: We integrate gender analysis across all programs, support women-led climate solutions, and advocate for policies that recognise the interconnection between gender equity, public health, and environmental protection.

Food Sovereignty

Community-Led Food Sovereignty

Supporting smallholder farmers to reclaim seed sovereignty, diversify crops, and build resilient local food systems.

Why it matters: Industrial agriculture and climate change threaten traditional seed varieties and farming knowledge. Uganda’s smallholder farmers — who produce most of the country’s food — are increasingly vulnerable to land grabs, market volatility, and extreme weather.

Our approach: We support community seed banks, promote agroecological practices, and advocate for policies that protect farmers’ rights to save, exchange, and sell their own seeds.

Solar panels
REPower Afrika

Batteries and Renewable Energy Solutions

A pan-African campaign accelerating community-owned renewable energy access across the continent through advocacy and grassroots action.

Why it matters: Over 600 million people in Africa lack access to electricity. Uganda’s rural communities are disproportionately affected, relying on expensive, polluting sources like kerosene and diesel generators.

Our approach: REPower Afrika connects activists across 10 African countries to demand a just energy transition. In Uganda, we deploy community solar micro-grids, train local technicians, and advocate for policies that prioritise decentralised renewable energy over fossil fuel expansion.
