Powering the Harvest
In northern Uganda, two shortages hold farming families back at the same time: a lack of water for their crops and a lack of affordable power on their farms. In this new policy brief, CECIC argues that these are not two problems but one, and that decentralised solar energy is the most realistic way to solve both together.
Drawing on the latest data, the brief shows that more than 96 percent of Uganda's agriculture depends on rainfall, that rural electricity access remains as low as 9 to 11 percent on the grid, and that up to half of some harvests are lost for want of powered cooling and storage. It points to real solar projects already working in Gulu, Yumbe, Apac, and Moyo, sets out the barriers that keep these solutions from scaling, and offers eight clear recommendations to government, financiers, and partners.
If you care about food security, climate resilience, and a fair energy transition that reaches the rural poor, this brief is for you.
