The National Organic Agriculture Policy provides a framework for promoting and strengthening organic agriculture in Uganda. It aims to improve agricultural productivity, food and nutrition security, farmers' livelihoods, environmental protection and access to local and international markets. The policy highlights challenges facing organic agriculture, including limited research, inadequate farmer training, weak extension services, poor access to organic inputs, certification barriers and insufficient investment.
It identifies key priority areas, including research and technology development, organic agriculture education and training, improved production systems, post-harvest handling and value addition, and standards, certification and accreditation. It also recognises the importance of indigenous knowledge, soil fertility, ecosystem management and collaboration among government, farmers, researchers and other stakeholders.
